Ruddles The Bear

Ruddles The Bear

Ruddles The Bear is the station's mascot, he has been with Epsom Hospital Radio since the autumn of 1979. He got his name following a ‘Name the Mascot’ competition which Epsom District Hospital Radio (as we were then known) ran in the local press.

You can listen to Ruddles The Bear on Epsom Hospital Radio during the hours that we don't broadcast.

Tune into the Ruddles The Bear's show and you'll hear whatever Ruddles the Bear wants to play you.

Ruddles the Bear has been with the radio station for a very long time, he used to regularly go to outside broadcasts, but sadly, as the years passed, he became forgotten. Somebody put the Ruddles The Bear in the storage room for our outside broadcast equipment, where he sat forgotten. But at night, when no-ones looking, he sneaks out of the cupboard and wanders into the studio where he plays some music, so that the listeners of Epsom Hospital Radio have something to listen to when none of the DJ's are around to do a show.

I'd buy a basket, a rug and lots of food, and go for a picnic in the woods.

Anywhere with trees!

I quite like the jungle book, what's that song? The Bear Necessities! Oh I love it!

Yogi Bear, "I'm smarter than the average bear!" He makes me laugh!

I like American Football, Chicago Bears are my favourite team.

I usually just drink water, but it has to be water I haven't just been to the toilet in!

What is your favourite food?

Foxes Glaciers, I like the pictures on the packaging!

What inspires you?

The person that had the patience to sit down and type out a profile for a bear, he must be very sad indeed, also anyone who read this far without giving up, you rock my world!

Buggles – Video Killed The Radio Star, it’s not true, it didn’t.

Johnny Preston’s Running Bear, it has nothing to do with bears, I was so disappointed! I might sue him under the Trade Descriptions Act!

What is your favourite album?

British Sea Power’s Open Season, though I’ve never heard it, I usually just stare mesmerised at the cover!

Have you met anyone famous and if so, under what circumstances?

In the old days when they took me to outside broadcasts I met a couple, but that was so so long ago now! I spent all my time now locked inside their storage cupboard.

Apart from your current partner, who would be your ideal dinner date and why?

I don’t have a partner, I’m a stuffed toy! But I wouldn’t mind going for dinner with Yogi, he’s good at finding food. Though, he is a drawing, so I’m not sure this is going to work out!

If you were marooned on a desert island, what would be the items you'd need most?

Desert Island? Are you mad? I think I’d need shave daily! Don’t you know how hot those places get! I’ve got way to much fur to be living on a desert island! Now if you said an Ice Cap, well, I would have to take a magic picnic hamper that constantly re-stocks itself. Oh, and an oar so I don’t go too far south!
